CZECH THAT FILM Festival is back!

Czech Film Madness Starts in April!

by Michal Sedlacek,

Director of the Festival

March 30, 2016

The Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka will open the annual Czech That Film Festival in Roxie Theater in San Francisco on April 4, 2016 and than movie theaters across the US will follow the suit.

The long wait is finally over. The annual Czech That Film festival is coming back this spring. Starting in San Francisco this time, the festival will offer a highly regarded slate of new Czech movies. Now in its fifth year, this showcase of the best what the current Czech cinema has to offer will reach 18 major American cities and for the first time also the capital of Canada – Ottawa. We are honored that the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, H. E. Bohuslav Sobotka will open this annual celluloid celebration that will include various selection of Czech features, including a documentary, animated movie for children and adults alike and one archival classic - “The Invention of Destruction” by renowned animator Karel Zeman - the most successful film in the Czech moviemaking history.

The Czech Prime Minister Sobotka will join the audience in Roxie Theater in San Francisco for the question and answer session after the Opening Night film “Life according to Havel” by the Czech director Andrea Sedláčková on April 4, 2016. This documentary paints an elegant portrait of the playwright, dissident and President, the late Václav Havel, whose life was rich in paradoxes and meant so much to his country.

This highly anticipated film series will also include the Czech entry in this year’s Oscar competition “Home Care” directed by Stanislav Horák who will visit many of the participating cities as a special guest of the festival and will discuss with the audiences all over the United States the making of his acclaimed title. "The Czech That Film Festival is a fantastic project which contributes to the promotion of Czech cinema in the United States. I heard many positive remarks regarding the festival from my fellow directors and I look forward to participating in the festival with my debut Home Care,” said the director Slavek Horak. Besides above mentioned three titles, the fest will also include “The Way Out”, a drama by Petr Václav which represented the Czech Republic at the Cannes film festival last year, the successful Czech – German coproduction “Schmitke”, the directorial debut of Vojtěch Kotek “Fifty” and the political thriller about Czech Mafioso “GangsterKa”. The little ones as well as the adults will enjoy “The Little Man”, the unconventional fairy tale that continues a long tradition of superb Czech live-action puppet features.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the many special events!

Zdobíme velikonoční kraslice. Decorating easter eggs - czech style.

Velikonoce se blíží a s nimi přichází čas kraslic. Klatovské muzeum připravilo pěkný pořad o nejrůznějších způsobech zdobení tradičních kraslic a jejich významu.

Easter is upon us and that means the time to decorate traditional KRASLICE is here. Klatovy Museum put together a nice program showcasing different ways of decorating eggs for Easter. Even though the video is all in Czech you might enjoy seeing different techniques.

Don't forget we will have a Easter Egg workshop on March 20th from 10 am to 3 PM.

Postup, krok za krokem jak na to.

My o Mikulášovi a on, Mikuláš, za dveřmi.

Mikuláš ztratil plášť,

Mikuláška sukni,

přišli k nám pod okno,

byli oba smutní.

Už jedeme z kopečka,

vrzají nám kolečka!

Poděkování patří všem, kdo naskočily(i) do téhle rozhrkané káry a pomohli s letošní Mikulášskou! A že Vás byla pěkná řádka. Téměř 50 lidí se podílelo nějakým dílem na přípravě.

NEW! A SLOVAK CLUB

Během tohoto roku naše škola získá statut neziskové organizace a hodiny prožité s námi budete moci vykázat v mimoškolní charitativní činnosti.

Slovenský klub se bude scházet v neděli v 9 hodin ráno.

Slovak Club invites all small Slovaks and their parents!

We are happy to welcome Petra Petraskova, Mgr. to our school. Petra will lead our new Slovak Club that we are forming after so many of you expressed interest. Petra is from Slovakia, and her husband Jan is from Czech. They are looking forward to bringing up their two children in 3 languages. Petra studied speech therapy at the Masarykova University in Brno. We will have a real specialist in our midst.  Very soon we will meet her three and a half year old son and one year old daughter in the Czech School. She was getting ready all summer long, back in Slovakia, while visiting with her family.

I am really looking forward to working with her - so this is an official WELCOME from me!

We decided to start with a literary, music and movement program. We want to meet the children and their parents. I know there are quite a few older children among us and that this form of education is not as interesting to them. I would like to invite them to cooperate with us as mentors and role models for their young friends. We will have non-profit status pretty soon and that means you will be able to claim hours spent with us as volunteering or charity work.  Let us know!

The Slovak Club will meet every Sunday from 9 - 10 am, this Fall.

Dear friends,

I am pleased to announce that the government of the Czech Republic has granted our organization a financial gift for the year 2013 as and for our contributions to Czech heritage and furthering Czech-US relations. We have recieved CZK 100,000.- that will enable us to apply for a non-profit status. We will use these funds to create a library of czech books and movies and to subscribe to a czech children's magazine as well as to bring a czech artist.

Our school has a wonderful year ahead! Thank you.
