Eventbrite - MALINA BROTHERS
Bratři Malinové, nejznámější „sidemani“ českého folku a country

SPJST, Czech Heritage Museum to host
Sts. Cyril and Methodius program May 22

(via: Brian Allen Vanicek, SPJST Home Office)

The Czech Heritage Museum in Temple is partnering with the SPJST throughout the spring and summer on the free informal “All Things Czech” lecture and discussion series.

On May 22, “All Things Czech” continues with the theme of “Czech Religious Heroes” with a journey to ninth century Moravia and “The Life and Times of Saints Cyril and Methodius.” Saints Cyril and Methodius were the principal Christian missionaries among the Slavic peoples and are credited with devising the first alphabet used to convey the Gospels in the Slavic language. Fr. Stephen Nesrsta, Pastor of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church of Corn Hill and Father Paul Chovanec, Pastor of St. Justin Martyr Catholic Church of Houston and Fr. Lukas Jambor of the Diocese of Olomouc Youth Center in Rajnochovice, Czech Republic will present the program.

The Greek missionaries Saints Cyril and Methodius were the apostles of the Slavic peoples. Preaching Christianity in the native language, they brought the Slavic countries firmly into the sphere of the Christian Church. For five years they worked to establish Christian worship according to the forms and language of the Moravian people. They inevitably clashed with the German missionaries, who were committed to the Latin form of Christianity.

After Cyril’s death in 869, Methodius was appointed Bishop of the Slavic peoples, but the Germanic missionaries, who from the very beginning opposed Slavic missionaries in Moravia, seized Methodius on his return from Rome, and kept him in prison for almost three years. Eventually, Methodius returned to Constantinople to complete a translation of the Bible that he and Cyril had begun together.

The May 22 programs will begin with a reception at the SPJST Home Office at 6 p.m. followed by the presentation at 7 p.m. next door at the SPJST Conference Room. The public is cordially invited. The SPJST Home Office is located at 520 North Main Street in Temple, Texas.
